Abstract:
The aim of this study was to consider globalisation and internationalisation from a certain point of view. What kind of challenges
and needs the laboratory technician today has to meet the demands of the modern laboratory work. How can the teacher and
school environment increase and support the international awareness of the future laboratory technician.

In this study the international issues of the development plans released by the Ministry of Education were first discussed and
analysed. Secondly, in the framework of the internationalisation the objectives for the competence and qualifications in the
laboratory technology were collected. Furthermore the experiences and the development of the earlier international activities of the
laboratory department of the Savo Vocational College were analysed. Thirdly the present international work placement activities of
other vocational colleges, which provide education in the field of the laboratory technology, were collected. A fresh plan and
strategy based on these results was made for developing the future international activities at the laboratory department of the Savo
Vocational College. In practice, work-based learning periods abroad will be organised.

This work clearly showed, that the outset of the international operations at school requires a lot of personal activity and dedication
from the teacher. The teacher must have ability to organise, market and tutor these activities so that the students commit
themselves and get inspired about this challenge. It is absolutely important for a teacher to create good personal contacts to the
students as well as to the contact persons abroad. By means of these relationships all participants may reach good, practical tools
for an adequate and high quality performance.

Starting from the experiences of work placements abroad, the planning of new contacts and other preliminary arrangements were
successful. All participants considered the tools for action and activity itself useful and successful. This kind of international activity
serves well the students who are willing to put pressure on their studies by entering international learning environment to develop
their competitive professional skills and to improve their employability.
