Abstract:
Purpose and objective of this development project was to investigate chances and challenges of e-Learning in foreign language
training, with focus on German language at the Jyväskylä Polytechnic. The development project dealt with planning and
conducting an online course for German for beginners. The e-Learning environment R5 was used as a technical platform which can
be also regarded as a Learning Management System (LMS). There is an increasing demand for e-Learning contents. Students
would like to conduct part of their studies through the network. That increases flexibility in terms of time resources and periods of
classroom instruction. The project had the following objectives: planning a pilot course in the autumn of 2003, defining target group
and objectives, developing a set of working tools and habits, content production, evaluating the technical prerequisites, integrating
multimedia contents, tutoring through the net, mapping and evaluating students experiences. In the theoretical background basic
issues of behaviorismn and constructivismn were discussed in terms of a systematic approach towards e-Learning. The results of
the project were the following: very significant was the very low drop-out rate, 18 of 20 students conducted the whole course and
received also their credits. According to the students the structure of the course was good and fitting the needs. The deadlines as
an overall guiding principle were considered as very useful. In terms of interactivity there is much to develop and to learn, both on
synchronous and on asynchronous level. The course was in general a self-learning programme for the students with limited
opportunities to interact with each other.
